Thermal Batteries
(Molten Salt Batteries)
OVERVIEW
Thermal batteries (molten salt batteries) use an electrolyte that is solid at ambient temperatures. Because of the inactive electrolyte, these batteries can be stored with little to no power loss for long periods of time (>25 years). However, they could be activated within a fraction of a second to produce high power output ranging from watts to kilowatts.
We are developing advanced electrolytes, electrode architectures, and integrating thermal batteries into industrial and specialized applications e.g., satellites, deep-space probes, radars, sensors for harsh environments.
